Stampin’ Up!’s December 2015 Paper Pumpkin Kit

I’ll be the first to admit that I haven’t been too impressed with the Paper Pumpkin Kits lately. In fact, this is the first one I haven’t sold in months – and I’ve also decided it’s my last. I’ve had lots of shipping issues with just the Paper Pumpkin Kit and have been turning around and selling them because I just don’t want to make cards I may not like or use. It’s definitely great for those who don’t have a lot of time to craft and want everything they need to come in a kit. The convenience is great! But I find that I’m happier when I get to create my own creations.

That being said – I really like this month’s kit! It’s a calendar kit and comes with a stand.  It’s something I know I’ll use all the time. Not one calendar card is the same and it’s an all or nothing concept – you either keep the entire thing, or give the entire finished product away as a gift.

December 2015 Paper Pumpkin

I spent a good hour putting it all together…and a little longer stamping personal dates.  All the stamps are included and I love the font of the monthly stamps.

December 2015 Paper Pumpkin 3

December 2015 Paper Pumpkin 2

You can personalize this with any of the stamps included in this set – I used some colors that didn’t come with this set (Soft Suede is what’s included) to differentiate the different dates.

December 2015 Paper Pumpkin 1

Stampin’ Up!’s video is great, but is entirely music. So if you’d like to watch my version of the process and hear what’s going on (I apologize in advance, I feel like pregnancy is making my voice more raspy and it’s more difficult to catch my breath), here it is:

I rushed through that video and it still took me almost 2 hours to edit and post – I hope people realize how much work goes into it!

Tomorrow is Christmas Eve!!! YIKES!  Merry Christmas, Everyone! I wish you all a joyful holiday with your family and friends. Thanks for visiting and following this very last minute impromptu blogpost – I really didn’t plan on making a video or posting this at all! My husband has been working nights this week so it’s driving me crazy to watch the kids only and not do anything for myself – they’ve been neglected tonight (sort of)! I’m also working some overtime so my brain is almost dead. Only one more day to go!

Mondo Magnolia Thanks

Hi Everyone!

I’ve been slacking on crafting lately.  I took a few days off work to get some appointments taken care of and to get our cars registered and I feel like I’m more busy as a “stay at home mom”than as a full time worker! Sheesh! I did cram a lot into 3 days but it really wore me out!

On a good note – my YouTube channel reached 3,000 subscribers! I can’t thank you all enough. In the same week, I had two negative comments left by some very hateful viewers. But…it’s ok! They were on older videos and I know I’m still learning and growing with my video experience. I’ve chosen not to be offended because they could use some love in their lives :). Oh! And apparently, it’s my 1 year anniversary with this blog!

Live Love Cards’ theme for this month is “Thanks” so I thought this card would be appropriate. I have had this stamp set a while and have been wanting to use it.

Mondo Magnolia Thanks 1

It makes such a bold statement, doesn’t it? I used distress inks to watercolor the petals and embossed the sentiment on vellum.

Mondo Magnolia Thanks

Adding some gold touches and sequins, I finished off this simple card. I think it’s so pretty and I will definitely do more of these in the future.

Mondo Magnolia Thanks 2

Hope you all enjoyed it!  Here is my video if you’d like to watch:

Somebunny

I have coworker named Winny who loves bunnies. I’m only guessing her obsession with them since I’m only told this – I work from home so it’s difficult to know what some people in the office are really like, especially when they live on the West Coast and I’m in the Midwest.  Some relationships are forged over conversation via Instant Messenger and that’s how I get to know everyone these days (or for the most of the past 3 years).

Winny lost a good high school friend suddenly yesterday. When she told me that, I knew I would be making a card for her. I got this My Favorite Things stamp set quite a while ago with her in mind, but kept pushing it back because there were other things I wanted to do – so it’s sad that this occasion would be the one to initiate me to make a card for her.

IMG_0926

There is so much sadness in the world. My husband is a medical resident and comes home with stories everyday and you can tell he is worn from the day’s work. I pull up Facebook and Instagram and see sad stuff all the time. But I’m reminded how spreading kindness is so important – so after making this card, I also prepared/sent one to a little girl in New York who is burn victim and lost her entire family in an intentional fire.  Safyre suffered severe burns and lost her right hand and left foot and all she wants for Christmas is to fill her Christmas tree card stand with Christmas cards. I don’t want to post a picture because it makes me sad to see how someone has flipped her world upside down.

Ready, Set, Snow 1

(this card is from my last post)

If you want to share kindness with this sweet little girl, here is where to send Safyre’s Christmas cards:
P.O. Box 6126
Schenectady, NY 12306, USA

I hope these cards will bring both Winny and Safyre smiles and remind them of hope and love.

Big hugs to everyone! There are so many people with struggles…no matter how big or small and I wish everyone could find time to slow down and smile and remember to embrace the little moments that make life worth – while.

By the way – yesterday was also my husband’s birthday. It was a long and emotional day with all these things tugging at my heart…but here is the card I made him just to end this post with a bit of warmth. I stamped our family using a stamp set called Tandem Ride. I even made mine to have a baby bump…hehe. I have never made a card using colored pencils only so I thought I would do something a little different. Enjoy and have a wonderful day! Blessings!

Ready, Set, Snow

Hi all! Finally – a NEW card!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I had that week off work and it seemed to fly by with all the preparations for the holiday! I was hoping to get some crafting done and I really didn’t do everything I wanted to do. I spent one day shopping, one day baking and ALL day Wednesday cooking for my family of 30+. It was a lot of work – they came, they ate, they left – and because I’m a complete sucker for whatever makes my kids happy, I had 6 boys here that night and the next night. PHEW! Overall, it was a very pleasant holiday despite all the work.

I gathered all my holiday cards for Iliana at My Sweet Petunia (photo on the left)- hoping they will make someone’s holiday brighter this year -and also wrapped up the Share Handmade Kindness Challenge with Jennifer McGuire (that’s a box of cookies to the right). I also completed my second-ever card order. I re-created 3 card designs (5 each) and had it shipped out that weekend (below).

IMG_0840

I also spent some time earlier this week making an Advent calendar – see my last post. OK….so maybe I DID do a lot – it just didn’t seem like it.

So how about that NEW card? I have so many stamp sets that I love that are starting to pile up! This Ready, Set, Snow set is one that I really want to use before Christmas – it comes with matching dies – one for the stamps and another for a shaker. I didn’t get the shaker dies so I had to get creative to make my own here.

Ready, Set, Snow 1

I used a circle die to cut out the window using partial-die cutting. Hey – I saved myself 27 dollars not buying that shaker die!

Ready, Set, Snow 2

I stamped and colored everything using Copic markers, cut them out, then layered them on a plain white piece of cardstock cut to the shape of the snow globe (colored with a soft blue for the background first), added sequins and beads, then enclosed it with the shaker portion.

Ready, Set, Snow 3

When I make purchases from Lawn Fawn directly, they always send a little thank you gift – a small stamp or some free samples of Lawn Fawn Paper – so I decided to use it on this card to give it some color.

If you’d like to see how I created this card, please watch my video below:

Thanks for stopping by!

DIY Fabric Advent Calendar

Take 2: Ever spend forever typing up a post or type an essay (oh high school days!) and it wipes out on you for no apparent reason? Yeah…I didn’t think that happens anymore but it did. SIGH

So November came and went and here we are approaching Christmas already.  Where has the year gone?!?!

I’ll be the first to admit – I’m completely ignorant when it comes to holiday traditions.  Until I married my husband who came from a typical American family, I had never celebrated Christmas in any traditional fashion. I grew up in a Buddhist household and we are first generation Americans. The extent of my celebrating Christmas includes my sister and I hopping on a city bus and riding to Target for a cheap Christmas tree and decorating it with whatever we could find.  There were never any gifts under it – if there were, it was old things we’d wrap out of construction paper to make ourselves feel happier about Christmas.

Advent

I live in such a great community now.  When December rolled around the neighborhood ladies started talking about Elf on the Shelf and the Advent calendar (as a part of our group chat) – things I’ve heard of but have never given much thought because I kept telling myself it wasn’t something I wanted to do or because I don’t have time for it. But REALLY – don’t I want my kids to grow up with these great traditions that will help them grow up to be kind and loving people, especially around the holidays? So I gave it some thought and decided that the Advent calendar was something I wanted to do. I got some ideas from Pinterest and had the urge to get this project done ASAP because I was clearly already behind.

My mother-in-law is an amazing quilter so I knew she had tons of fabric so I went over to her house after work Tuesday and got some fabric.  Not going to lie – I stopped at Michael’s first hoping there was something there I could buy first but they didn’t have anything but a book. After choosing the fabric I wanted, I went home and got to working and it took me two nights to finish this project.

Advent 4

I didn’t think this was something I was going to share, so I didn’t take any pictures prior to this step.  But here’s a list up to this point:

  1. Choose a back panel and cut to 24 x 30 inches. What I used is a beige denim, but I saw many projects using linen. If you chose a lighter/thinner fabric, you may want to have two panels and add batting to make it more quilt-like for sturdiness.
  2. Choose 6 different types of fabric designs. You only need 4 4×5 pieces of each, so it doesn’t require much at all. Or do 4 designs and do 6 pieces of each design – whatever is easier. I trimmed each piece to a width of 4 inches first, sewed it all together to make a strip of 6 pieces each, and then trimmed the top and bottom so they would all be the same height.
  3. Add a border using one of the designs of fabrics that you chose. I have a Janome sewing machine which I love and have had since my husband and I got engaged 12 years ago – I don’t sew much, but I enjoy having a use for it when I come up with a project! I don’t know how to work the corners and my mother in law tried explaining it to me – but I just did whatever worked at the time.Advent 3
  4. Fold the top down about 1/2 inch and sew to hem.
  5. Fold in the sides and bottom about 1/4-1/2 inch and sew to hem. All four sides of your fabric strips should be hemmed and free from frayed sides at this point.
  6. Add ribbon across the top of the strips so that you can add numbers for the countdown later (I used burlap ribbon) and sew it down (I just sewed one line across the top of the ribbon). I tucked them under when I sew these strips to the back panel in Step 8.
  7. Line up your strips and pin them down where you want to sew them down. The lines on the denim was especially helpful here!
  8. Sew your strips down from one end  to the other (in a “U” shape leaving the top open), tucking any lose ribbon ends if you didn’t secure them previously.
  9. Sew between each fabric piece to form a pocket.
  10. Add the numbers. I used black cardstock and numbers dies and glued them down using Multi Medium Matte adhesive. This step was very tedious, but it brings it all together!Advent 5
  11. I got brave here. I wanted a title for the calendar and didn’t know or have supplies for an ink transfer, so I free-formed it using a black fine-tipped Sharpie.  When I was done, I went over it with a broad-tipped Sharpie and added thickness to the downstrokes to create a faux calligraphy look. I’m sure inhaling these fumes were good for the baby…NOT.Advent 6
  12. Make the tags! This part I’m familiar with! I used some more dies (don’t worry – it will be linked at the bottom of my post) and cut out 24 of them for each pocket out of white cardstock.  Then I blended some color around the edges using some distress ink.Advent 2
  13. Write on the tags! If you want to go traditional, you can write scripture on them. I wanted to do fun activities for the kids – promote family time or acts of kindness. You can get lots of great ideas from Pinterest. I had to look at several pins before I got my 24 activities – I wanted to keep it simple and something I knew we could commit to EVERY year.  I tried my best to practice my brush handwriting here.  When I was done handwriting them all, I laminated them, punched a hole and added some green twine.Advent 1
  14. When I was all done, I realized I didn’t add a hanging mechanism, so I grabbed two scraps from the border fabric and made two loops for the top corners of the panel to insert a dowel. My husband shortened the dowel for me and I used some thick natural twine to make a hanger.

Advent

I’m so happy with how it turned out – and my husband likes it! So we’re going to give it a go and see if this is a tradition we want to keep doing each year. If not…it’s a great Christmas decoration! hehe. New activities are fun and I’m going to do my best to stay diligent with the kids each day.

I hope you like it too! Thanks for following along!
