2016 Teacher’s Card Gift Set

Hi, Everyone!

Before I start – I want to disclose that this idea is not mine. It’s Jennifer McGuire’s – she’s BRILLIANT. I didn’t feel the need to make a video because her’s is full of information and tips. I don’t have the same supplies as her so I wanted to post how I changed it up a little and made it my own. You can visit her blog post HERE and see hers and view her video – it’s great!

Jennifer is a PRO at foiling. I’ve tried many techniques in the past with a standard laminator and gave up because I felt that nothing worked. Then I got the MINC Machine and put it in a drawer and haven’t played with it since – I only tested it using the few tags that came with the machine which worked great. SO – months later, here we are.  I watched Jennifer’s video yesterday and got inspired to make these card sets for my boys immediately because I don’t have much time left to get them to their teachers as school ends on Monday.

Jennifer has some downloads on her blog post – I tweaked them a little to remove the apple stem/leaf because I don’t have colored foil.  She goes through a lot of work to add a lot of color to hers with foil and it’s beautiful! This was the best way for me make the cards with the supplies I have.  After removing the stems, I added “from the desk of…” and then printed them on Neenah 80lb cardstock.  Make sure you print these on a laser printer – the foil will only adhere to toner that is heat activated!

Tip: I used my MINC toner pen to fill in some small speckles of white where toner didn’t cover the entire apple during the printing process (my printer is running low on toner). Here’s what they look like once I foiled them with red and gold:

I don’t have the Paper Smooches Notebook die that Jennifer uses, so I used the Wonky Stitched Rectangle STAX dies from My Favorite Things for one set. I would’ve liked to use this die on both sets but because Mrs. Mack’s name is longer, it didn’t work out for an A1 (4 bar size) card. So I cut those down as small a I could, then rounded the corners and die cut a border of dots at the top using a Paper Smooches border die set that seems to have been discontinued :(. Those holes were really fun to poke out after each cut (NOT).

I used a stem from a Clearly Besotted set and stamped it in Garden Green. Then I used an alphabet background stamp by Simon Says Stamp to stamp some colored cardstock that were cut down to 3 1/4 x 4 1/2 and adhered the “tags” to these colored panels.

The final step was to cut some card bases to 3 1/2 x 9 1/2 (folded in half – the card is 3 1/2 x 4 3/4 for a top folding card). I’m not a colorful person – but look at these! They’re gorgeous! Jennifer used colored cardstock as the card base on her sets – but I personally don’t like to use colored cardstock as a base because I don’t think you can see the note inside well depending on the color you use. The extra step to make white card bases is worth it to me and gives the colored panel some highlight (and I get to prolong my stash of colored cardstock). 🙂

2016 Teacher Card Kit 4

I ordered some 4 bar envelopes on Amazon last night and they’ll arrive tomorrow – just in time for Monday.  I’ll make boxes for these sets and send them to school with the boys on their last day. I know the teachers will love these personalized gifts! My mom always told me to always respect my teachers like you would your parents – I truly believe this as well.  They aren’t babysitters! They’re parenting and teaching our kids the things we can’t/aren’t trained to and they deserve to be spoiled!

SPEAKING OF COLOR – the new Stampin’ Up! catalog is available to me and I was able to do some preordering.  Sadly, I didn’t get any new stamp sets…but I did make a huge investment in the new IN-COLORS and stocked up on lots of paper, new and old. I think this is my last order with Stampin’ Up! as a demonstrator. I know I’ve said this previously but I REALLY think this is my last.  I can’t keep up with the quarterly sales without customers while spending money with other companies too! We recently finished our basement and spent more money than we thought to furnish it – everything adds up so quickly and you don’t realize how much you’ve spent until you see the bill.  EEEK. The remainder of my maternity leave in unpaid so I am making a huge effort to not buy anymore until I start working again (WHY…oh WHY did Lawn Fawn’s new release have to debut this morning?!). Anyway….here’s a look at the new colors. I LOVE each one. Last year, I only purchased two colors. I think these colors really complement the current annual colors and really completes my collection of inks (for now…HA!)

SU 2016-2018 In Colors

That’s all for today! I’m not sure when I’ll have time to do a card video again! I’m on my 4th month (out of 6) with Splitcoaststampers – so I’ll be able to slowly share my work with you soon – I think I’ll start posting one card every few days soon!

Have a wonderful day!

2016 Graduate

One of the first cards I ever made was a graduation card for my husband when he graduated from medical school 2 years ago. I did not own any stamps at that time and was just introduced to card making by my then-neighbor, Karen. Her son is now graduating from college and I feel so blessed to know this family. Brandon is going to be an engineer graduate and will be moving to Arizona to work for PSE Archery – such an awesome job, not to mention that Brandon is a highly skilled archer himself!

2016 Grad

Lyla took a very long nap this morning. After completing two cards for Splitcoaststampers, I remembered that we have Brandon’s graduation party to go to this weekend, so I had to come up with something quick. I hope the blue is not overkill because these are his school colors.  I used Pacific Point cardstock and stamped out the numbers in the coordinating Stampin’ Up! color. This Mama Elephant set is so cute and I also have the dies. The hat and sentiment are from Stampin’ Up!’s Pure Gumption set. I used the Puffy Clouds dies from Lawn fawn to cut out vellum and layered them to create a gradient of clouds.

2016 Grad 2

I used staples to attach the clouds – I didn’t want to use adhesive and thought this would be a good option. I also used foam adhesive behind the numbers to give the number balloons some dimension. Such a simple and quick card!

Lyla is 5 weeks old now. Time has really flown by. The day goes by too fast between feedings and taking care of my 3 year old, Liam. I convinced myself before the baby came that I would have him potty trained during my maternity leave but it’s hard to enforce it when he is so resistant. I know he’ll do it when he’s ready and I’m in no hurry to make him grow up. I don’t have a video for the card I made above, but I do have a video that I want to share. Nichole Nordeman is a beautiful Christian singer who has touched me with more than one song –  she wrote this song very recently when her son prepared to graduate from the 5th grade. It pulls at my heartstrings.

I also want to welcome baby Faye Jordan Wears! My sister-in-law and her husband brought new life into this world this morning and I’m so excited for them. I look forward to our relationship growing by leaps and bounds as we watch our daughters grow up together. We love them so much and baby Faye is beautiful in every way! Such a blessing to have such wonderful people in our lives. They love us just the way we want and need to be loved and know how to bring laughter to us like no one else. Giving and receiving love are two very different things and what makes these guys so special is me is that they are great at both!

I also want to share an alphabet poster I made for Lyla that I hung up in her room. I have not practiced my lettering at all – but I get inspired every day as I scroll through Instagram so I spent some time making this for her 2 weeks ago.
