Oh, Boy!

Hi, Everyone!

I have been making cards and I have forgotten to share!  The two I’m sharing on this card are birthday cards.  This Mickey Mouse card was for a 1 year old’s birthday.  He loves Mickey!  I got this stamp set along time ago at Michael’s, I think.  If you want to see an image of the stamp, you can click here to see it on Amazon- but it doesn’t seem like a great price, so check your local craft store first!

Oh Boy!

I stamped Mickey on Neenah cardstock and then colored him with copic markers.  For the black piece, I embossed the sentiment with white powder and the Mickey heads in clear powder.  Then I fussy cut the image and adhered him on using some foam tape.

Oh Boy 4

A quick and simple way to add some wow to a plain background.

Lotso Card in a Box

This second card is for a friend who recently moved to Hawaii.  She asked me to make a card for her husband’s upcoming birthday.  They love Lotso the bear.  I know….it’s kind of weird on this card and I almost didn’t want to share because I wasn’t sure if anyone would appreciate it!  It means a lot to them – since their love story involves this purple bear so I tried to incorporate as much as she asked for: Lotso, palm trees and turtles.

Lotso Card in a Box 1

Lotso was printed from the internet.  The turtles are from Clearly Besotted and the palm tress are from Lawn Fawn.  The back ground is sponged with distress ink.

I wince… but I think Lotso is pretty cute on this card – especially if you know my friend Kat at all.  She got this card in the mail the other day and “lurves” it!  She’s excited to give it to her husband.  🙂

I hope you enjoyed those!  I have two wedding cards to share but I’ll share those next time!  Have a great week!

XOXO,

MFT Birthday Explosion Box

DAY 3 of 3:  Innovation Master

Print

I’m no innovation master, but I do LOVE interactive cards!

Explosion Box

This was the card I was most excited to make – but also the one I was most nervous about.  I had so many ideas in my head, but making it all come together requires a lot of discipline.  I had to talk myself out of getting too wild… “Settle down, Caly…” “No…don’t even think about it…” 😛

When I narrowed the ideas down to execute this card – I took my sweet time.  I colored MANY images and only used what I thought would fit.  To construct the box, you’ll need a 12×12 piece of card stock.  Score it at 4 inches on all sides, then cut the score marks, stopping at the center square.  This box is a 4 x 4 inch box closed, so if you want a 3 x 3 box, start with a 9 x 9 piece of cardstock and score at 3 inches.  The lid works the same, except you’ll want to factor in a 1″ lip and 1/4″ flap for gluing to keep the sides down.

HERE IS THE FINAL PROJECT:

Explosion Box - Opened

The focal point of this card is the paper cake.  I cut strips of 1 1/2″ paper, applied some color using Spun Sugar distress ink and snipped them from one end to the other in fringe style so that I can wrap them to the curvature of a circle to form the tops of each layer of the cake.  I added a scallop border at the top of each layer colored with Cracked Pistachio distress ink.  Once the cake was done, I die-cut the Cheers word die and adhered two layers of white cardstock to make it strong.  I glued two strips of acetate to it and cut two little slits on the top of the cake to hold it up like a cake topper.  I really love how it turned out!

Explosion Box - 3D Cake

Initially, I envisioned a cake with critters and animals all over it.  When I put the cake together and attached it to the center of the card – I realized the cake is no where big enough to make this vision come to life – so I settled with making triangular stands for the gift boxes, bear and hippo so they are able to stand with support.

Lets get into the details of each flap, shall we?

Flap 1:  Magic Slider

Explosion Box - Magic Slider Tab

Explosion Box - Magic Slider Tab 2

I should’ve taken this shot straight on – I promise it is aligned perfectly! What’s better than interactive cards?  Mini-versions, of course!  This was so fun and easy to do.  Makes me giddy!

Flap 2:  Waterfall Fold

Explosion Box - Waterfall Flip Tab

Explosion Box - Waterfall Flip Tab 1

This one was tricky!  I wanted to fit all the elephants on this 4″ x 4″ space without overcrowding it and those ears made positioning difficult but I think it turned out ok.  🙂

Flap 3:  Shaker

Explosion Card - Shaker Tab

Explosion Card - Shaker Tab 1

These tigers are fiercely cute, right?!  I wanted to make a square shaker but didn’t have a square frame – so I settled for this rectangle frame, but I really love it!  It’s more of an accent and doesn’t take away from the rest of the card.

Flap 4:  Peek-a-boo Windows

Explosion Box - Flip Tabs 1

Explosion Box - Flip Tabs

I’ve never done these peek-a-boo windows before and thought this would be a great opportunity to try them out.  I colored the pieces using the same distress inks mentioned above for some interest (Spun Sugar and Cracked Pistachio).  I stamped different short sentiments on the doors to fill the dead space and sequins to act as knobs.

I added little party hats throughout to tie the different flaps together and to make it more cohesive.  How about that gingham patterned paper, though?  I need a few more of those packs on hand!

Here it is one more time so you don’t have to scroll up:

Explosion Box - Opened

EEPPP!!!  The photos just don’t do this card justice.  I really hope you like this card!  I’m so excited about it and I honestly don’t think I could ever make a card that could top this – it’s 5 cards in one!  Good luck to everyone who entered this contest – you are all amazing and talented and I’m so blessed to be a part of this community!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

XOXO,

caly-sig

Fairy Garden Card in a Box

Hi Everyone!

I wanted to share my fairy card-in-a-box with you today!  These cards are seriously so fun to make and not every one will turn out the same – so many possibilities!

Fairy Card in a box 1

I made one for my neighbor to give to his wife and one to keep for myself.  I’m learning that it’s more time saving to go ahead and make at least 1 extra (in case you mess one up or want to have one for another occasion).  One of the most time consuming things is choosing colors and getting all the pieces cut – so if I can do double the amount of everything in one sitting, that’s a plus for me!

This is a horizontal card-in-a-box.  Here are the dimensions that you will need for a card that fits in an A2 envelop (card size:  4.25″ x 5.50″):

Base:  4.25″ x 12″

With your base sitting horizontally, score at 2″, 5.50″, 7.50″, AND 11″

Turn you base 90 degrees so that it is now sitting vertically and score it at 2″

You will want at least 2 inserts:  4 11/16″ x 1″, scored at 5/8″ from each end to fit inside the box.

I know I have mad skills when it comes to drawing using the Paint tool…but don’t laugh at me.  Here’s a visual for those of you who like to see it:

Horizonal Card in a Box Image

The “dotted” lines are what you want to cut for the flaps on your box card.  You’ll also want to cut away the gray areas in the image – saving only a small tab at the bottom of the box to adhere and construct your box.

Fairy Cuttings.JPG

I cut out some grassy borders for the two tabs and them started gluing everything on in random places until I was happy.

Fairy Card in a Box

The final thing was matting the box – you can do this however you like.  I had lots of extra pieces so I used them to decorate the front panel.  When closed up, The box is plain – I didn’t feel the need to make the card bulkier by adding more patterned paper – but feel free to do whatever makes you happy!

Fairy Card in a box 2

I hope you enjoyed this card!  It really makes me happy 🙂

XOXO,

caly-sig

Birthdays and Babies

Hi Everyone!

I just wanted to stop by and share a few cards I’ve made recently – all birthday related.

I made a floral card in a box card last month for a friend that was a huge hit -another neighbor asked me to make one for her mom. If you want to see the details for the box, please see this blog post here.  The only difference is I used Clearly Besotted’s Miniature Florals for the flowers.  I’m also entering this card in Darlene Devrie’s LiveLoveCards’ monthly challenge. 🙂

She asked for bright colors!

Another neighbor had a baby last week – so this is a really quick card that I made to welcome Baby Joseph:  I used MFT’s Stitched Banner Alphabet dies, Snuggle Bunnies, and their Stitched Square Scallop Frames dies.

welcome-baby-joseph

welcome-baby-joseph-1

This card is so simple – I just sponged some Blue on a square piece of white cardstock, stamped the images and then colored them with various copic markers.  The die cutting really does all the work on this card.

Last but not least – I have another birthday card that I made for a personal friend who lives in California.  She loves bunnies – so this time, I used Mama Elephant’s Page Huggers to make her a card.  I actually have a list of supplies for this card that I will post below.  Just some sponging, stamping and coloring again using Copics :).

I hope you’ve enjoyed these! Until next time – I’m busy working on Holiday cards!

xoxo,

Floral 40th Card-in-a-box

Hello again!

Today is my neighbor and friend, Kerri’s birthday! I’ve been working for a few weeks now what I’m going to do for her 40th birthday. I’ve gotten a few new stamp sets and really wanted to use them. I started out with the Foxy Friends stamp set and Fox builder punch from Stampin’ Up!’s new catalog.

I put together a few foxes using the fox builder.

img_5906

They’re super cute but at this point, I had not decided what I wanted to do yet. Then I started playing with the Foxy Friends stamp set.

img_5907

Once I got all of this cut out – I KNEW I wanted to do a card-in-a-box.  Ah! It’s been a LOOONNNG time since I’ve made one and I got really excited!

There are MANY templates on pinterest. Here’s the one I made for myself (please note that the height of the box should be 5.5 inches – not 6. Sorry for my typo! card-in-a-box-pop-up-template (click to view).

Here’s my card – It’s so cute! While I was putting it together – I decided that this card is not suitable for a 4oth birthday, but I knew exactly which direction I wanted it to go and who I wanted the recipient to be.

foxy-friends-card-in-a-box

Adorable right?! And full of encouraging sentiments. I hope the recipient enjoys it!  Now – how about that 40th card! I wanted to change it up a bit for more display space – so I looked for a tutorial on how to make a card-in-a-box card that sat on it’s side (aka – a rectangle card-in-a-box.  For the card below – the box is made using a base that’s 4 1/4″ x 12″, scored at 2″, 5 1/2″, 7 1/2″, and 11″. Turn 90 degrees and score at 2″.  The 2″ flap once you cut them down will be the top part of the card that folds down.  For the inserts, cut 2 4 11/16″ x 1″ strips and score at 5/8″ from each end.  If you’d like detailed video – here’s one I watched: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/239042692697550254/.

I had no idea what I was going to do for this card – so I went to my stamp stash and started pulling all things floral and butterflies.  😀  Here’s what I came up with! I hope you LOVE it as much as I do!!!

kerri-40-card-in-a-box-2

Don’t worry! As always – the supplies will be listed below. This was NOT as difficult as it seems. I felt that the Foxy Friends one above was more difficult! The gold on this card just speaks for itself so I didn’t feel the need to decorate the other flaps.

kerri-40-card-in-a-box

Kerri loves blush pink, tiffany blue and gold – so I tried my best to incorporate these colors.  EEEK!!! I cannot WAIT to give this card to her!

kerri-40-card-in-a-box-1

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KERRI!

XOXO,

caly-sig

I have another card I did today that I’m excited to share later on this week – stay tuned!!!

Card in a Box

CARD IN A BOX. These are the coolest cards. It folds flat into a standard card size and fits in a regular envelope. When you open the card and stand it up, it’s a box with pop up sentiments!

I found the template on pinterest and you can get it here on a site linked to another crafter’s blog at stampwithjenn.com.

As you can see, the box is made from any cardstock. I used craft paper and decorated my white paper using whatever stamps I wanted. You can also tell, that I just used my extra pastel cardstock to add layering for this card.

The baby card is made using a stamp set called Zoo Babies. It’s such a cute set!  The sentiment is made using a stamp from the set Label Love:

Zoo Babies - Card in a BoxZoo Babies - Card in a Box 1

This flower set is made from a set called Flower Patch. Unlike the Zoo Animal set which I had to cut each character by hand, the Flower Patch set comes with a coordinating set of dies (Flower Fair Framelits Dies) that cuts the matching image. Can you say $$$???? Yes, I’m a sucker.

The smaller flowers are from a set called Petite Petals and also comes with a coordinating punch! Ugh…yes…I bought that too.

Flower Patch - Card in a BoxFlower Patch - Card in a Box 1

I know these look complicated…but all it really requires is a a few measurements (for paper layering, folding and scoring). They are SOO easy to make and not to mention rewarding when you’re done. The recipient will think you’re amazing when you’re really not…lol.  OK…take the credit…it’s amazing!

If you’re interested in any of these items, please let me know! Or you can sign up with Stampin’ Up and place your own order, but please include me as your demonstrator – your business/credit is much appreciated!
