Sweet 16th

Hi Everyone!

I made a simple sweet 16th birthday card over the weekend with some simple stamping and die-cutting that I’d like to share.  I haven’t gotten a chance to stamp much lately.  My kids are out of school and it seems like the little energy I have is being sucked out of me. I have poured many many hours over researching watercolors.  I spent a lot of time on an excel sheet and staring at Daniel Smith watercolors (once I convinced myself that I wanted them over Winsor & Newton watercolors).  I’ll share all that when I am able to take pictures of the set up – they arrive tomorrow!

Happy 16th- 1

A neighbor (of course), asked me to make a card so I did.  I can’t get too creative these days so I’ve been making cards by request and remaking similar cards to what I’ve done in the past.  I don’t get a chance to use Stampin’ Up! stamps too much anymore so it was nice to pull out this stamp set.  Just layered stamping here with some sponging in the background in green.

Happy 16th

That’s all!  Just a quick share.  I’ll have a lot more to share once my new watercolor palette is set up.  I can’t wait!

XOXO,

caly-sig

Life Is Tough But So Are You

Happy Friday!!!

I’m so excited to have a 3 day weekend!  My husband will be off for the first time in 2 weeks and I can’t tell you what a relief that is!  My kids are out of school for the summer and it has been a LONG week.  It only occurred to me two nights ago that I have not made any cards for leisure since Mother’s Day.  That’s how pre-occupied my mind has been!  I also picked up pointed pen calligraphy for the first time in a very long time time this week with every intent to practice the Copperplate script.  I’ve been hesitating for a while because there is so much involved.  So many different pen holders, inks, nibs, papers – it’s quite overwhelming.  I chose the wrong ink to start with and I struggled for hours the first evening I tried.  So I’ll say this – I HATE Higgins Calligraphy Ink (supposedly Higgins Eternal Ink is great though…I wouldn’t know at this point).

You can click on the images above to  enlarge – but I tried to write the letter a with the Higgins ink and struggled for a few hours before I decided to switch to a new ink.  I had tried three different nibs and they did not make a difference at all.  I do have an instagram account for my lettering if you’re interested in following.  The handle name is Calygraphy – clever, right?  😉

So about my cards.  I thought after a long hard week that I should make some encouragement cards.  Anyone else shop with Ellen Hutson?  I’m going to have to endorse this amazing company for a second…because they are AMAZING.  First of all – they are wonderful people who reward loyal customers.  I thoroughly enjoy using their 10% off discount to have an excuse to place an order monthly.  🙂 . To honor some special women in their lives, they created a stamp set to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).  It’s a beautiful set and $25 from each set sold goes to fund the BCRF.  What a wonderful cause, right?  It’s also a beautiful stamp set that comes with coordinating dies with some powerful sentiments.  You must see it for yourself – the link will be provided below in my supplies.

Life is Tough But So Are You

I stamped a lot of images.  I love layering stamps as well – they add lots of dimension with little effort.  These images are smaller so it’s nice to have coordinating dies.  I made lots of passes through my big shot to cut out all of them.  I have a Brother Scan N Cut 2 that I could’ve used to make all the cuts in one pass but because I had the dies – I decided to do it the traditional way.

Life is Tough But So Are You 1

I need to start making more than one card when I pull out supplies to make a card. That’s what I did this time.  The color variation makes it fun.

Life is Tough But So Are You 2

I sponged some distress ink in the background to give the card some color and embossed the sentiment in clear powder using Versafine Onyx Black Ink.  The sequins finish off the card with a bit of shine.

Life is Tough But So Are You 4

Last week, I also made a graduation card for my neighbor – she graduated from Elementary school so I thought I would make a fun card using their school colors.  I used Lawn Fawn’s Smart Cookie stamp set and some punches to make a banner.   I got this idea straight from the Lawn Fawn website and cased it – I couldn’t come up with an original design!  Very basic but I made it fun for her by using a Mini Action Wobbles.

Smart Cookie Panther 1

That’s all for today!  I hope you enjoyed my two cards!  Supplies for the Courage card will be listed below!  Have a wonderful weekend!

Mother’s Day 2017

Happy Mother’s Day, Crafting Friends!

Hope you’re having a wonderful day!  I should’ve shared these cards sooner but it’s been a busy couple of days and lots of activities.  I had my 10 year college reunion the other night…that makes me feel old, but it was a lot of fun!    I want to quickly share a few cards that I made for Mother’s Day as well as a a little project I did for Teacher’s Appreciation week.

  1.  Floral Card in a Box (click on images to zoom)

I’ve made these a few times in the past year – their a favorite for my next door neighbor ;).  There are lots of tutorials on Pinterest and YouTube.  Here’s my last blog post here and the link to the video I used:  https://craftincaly.wordpress.com/2016/09/19/floral-40th-card-in-a-box/

  2. Freehand Florals (click on images to zoom)

This is simple layered stamping – but I love the bouquet look.  The stamp set is called Freehand Florals and you can view it here.  I embossed the sentiment with white embossing powder on black cardstock and added sequins to finish off the card.

  3. Second Generation SpotLight (click on images to zoom)

As soon as I saw Jennifer McGuire’s video on this last week using the new Ellen Hutson’s Courage stamp set to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, I had to try this technique for myself.  I don’t have that stamp set yet (but I did order it this morning) – so I used the same Freehand Florals set from above and it turned out sooooo beautifully!  You can view Jennifer’s blog post with video here.

  4. Cross-stitched Roses

This stamp set by Waffle Flowers called Stitched Roses is amazing!  I spent a lot of time lining up these layering images….my OCD killed me but it turned out looking so relistic!  You can find the awesome stamp set here.  I used a simple border die and some sequins to keep the card simple.  It’s so pretty!

  5. Teacher Appreciation – Cupcake Liner Flowers

Last week was Teacher Appreciation week.  On Thursday night…I got a text from Evan’s friend’s mom asking if I had any paper flowers lying around.  It was bedtime and there was a situation/possible meltdown because crafting was not going so well in their home.  She wanted to make a project for her teacher and so I got excited at the chance to make some flowers so I went all out!  I followed this tutorial by Lia Griffith and made these cute flowers using cupcake liners and pencils.  I decorated some cardstock to wrap around a small jar and it turned out so cute.  The gift card was something I quickly stamped to hold gift cards for my boys’ teachers.

That’s all for now!  Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

XOXO,

Caly

Miscellaneous Cards

Hi Everyone!

I’m here to share some recent cards that I made.  Sometimes I feel like I haven’t done a whole lot until I look back and all the photos I’ve taken.  I made a set for a friend this past week and have a few older cards too.

  1.  Princess Thank You cards

Princess Thanks 1

I made this set for a neighbor.  Her daughter turned 1 and she waned a set of thank you cards to send out after the party.  I printed the crowns on cardstock using my laser printer and added some gold foiling using my Minc machine.  I used We Are Memory Keeper Next Level embossing folders for the pink cardstock.  It’s the Quilted set (there are two in each embossing folder set).  The sentiment is from Hero Arts and is a stamp and cut set called Thanks.

2.  Little Bundle

This Little Bundle Lawn Fawn set has been my go-to set for baby shower cards.  I just love that you can make it over and over again and it never gets old.  So…it might look similar to something I’ve shared before.

3.  Happy Pandas

I’ve made a similar card like this in the past as well, but this time, I used Copic markers. Copics and watercoloring are my favorite mediums.  This Happy Panda set is just adorable and super simple to color since Pandas are already black and white.  I just added some gray to them for some variation.

4.  Amazing Peonies

In the past, I have always used just the outline of this Peony Bouquet set to stamp and color.  This time, I decided to use this layering stamp set as it was intended – I used 3 different ink colors and it was effortless.  These cards can be whipped out so quickly!  The sentiments are from a My Favorite Things set called Amazing – imagine that! 🙂

5.  Wedding Cake

Concord and 9th makes amazing stamp sets.  I love this Happy Day stamp set because it can be used for so many occasions!  I made this for a wedding reception we went to last weekend.  I embossed the image in gold and watercolored using Distress Markers – I’ve never done that before and it really works a lot like Zig Clean Color Real Brush Markers.

6. Hello Florals

I used this stamp set for the 30 day coloring challenge in March.  I had to stop and think about that because I can’t believe it’s already May.  This is another set by Concord and 9th called Hello Lovely.  Instead of using black to emboss, I used white.  It really changes the effect of the card.  I used Zig Clean Color Real brush markers for this card.  I love the vibrant colors!

7.  Mickey and Minnie Birthday

Last but not least – I have a card I made using Mickey stamps that I got from Michaels – I don’t have a link for this one, sorry!  I personalized them using My Favorite Things’ Stitched Alphabet Banner dies.  A little personalization always makes a card more fun!

I hope you enjoyed those cards!  You can click on the images to enlarge them.  I have a few Mother’s Day cards to share next time – I hope I remember to share them before next Sunday!  Until then, take care!

Always Here For You – Magic Slider Card

Hey Everyone!

I feel like I’ve been slacking off since the coloring challenge ended so I wanted to make something really cool that I’ve never done before for this post.  Have you ever done a magic slider card?  I’ve seen a few of them in the past and a few more recently and it definitely had me wishing I had tried it sooner.  I wish I had more time to make a video too but for now…this will have to do!

You Are Here Magic Slider 1

If you haven’t seen one made yet (and there are lots of different variations on it) – there are some great ones on YouTube.  You don’t need to see it from me – though I have to admit…my self-doubt is preventing me from making videos too.  SHAME ON ME…I know! I shouldn’t think that way!

You Are Here Magic Slider 4

At a glance – this is the most boring black and white card ever.  But as you pull the tab up, it transforms!

You Are Here Magic Slider 3

No secret!  It’s just a simple slider card, promise!  But the illusion is so magical!  You just need acetate stamped with staz-on ink (because it’s permanent for a no-porous surface like acetate).  The exact same image is stamped underneath, colored, and positioned in the exact same place.  Voila!

You Are Here Magic Slider

I used Zig Clean Color Real Brush Markers to color this image.  I LOVE this Concord & 9th stamp set!  Supplies are listed below!

You Are Here Magic Slider 2

Thanks for stopping by today!

Lyla’s First Birthday

Hi, Everyone!!!

My daughter Lyla’s birthday party was two weeks ago and I honestly cannot believe I have not thought to share the event with you!  I even took a week off after this party to relax and get things done around the house! Oxymoron! I definitely got a lot done around the house but there was not a single day of rest or relaxation!

Let’s talk about this party, shall we? I’m a DIY person to the core. I seriously did everything I could possibly do myself for this party. The hardest part was deciding to do the party at all. My family works a lot. Most of them work 7 days a week and after 10 years of kids’ birthdays, I’ve learned not to try to work around their schedule. We knew that a few of my husband’s family members would come but only have a few close friends. So it was between a small intimate group or a large group-including all our neighbors who have grown to be both friends and family to us. My only daughter only turns one once right?!  Go big or go home, they say!

IMG_0310

First things, first. The invitation. I’ve been wanting to learn handlettering for a while now. My wonderful husband got me and iPad Pro for Christmas and I decided to play with it to create an invitation for her. I went with a boho theme. My lettering is not too great here and I did this way before I started my lettering journey with ipadlettering.com and thehappyevercrafters.com. If you want to see my work/progress, I have a separate instagram account for lettering named Calygraphy 😜. I got 50 invitations printed at Costco (they only sell them in sets of 25).

806A0029 copy

Next, I saved Starbucks frappe jars that my husband brings home from work, cleaned, and dried them. I gave them a coat if white spray paint and then blasted them with gold glitter paint. The brand I used was Krylon. Save yourself 40% at a local major craft store. I don’t buy anything without a coupon! I also got some large white feathers and spray-painted the ends with gold glitter as well. I got some silk flowers to arrange these. So many options here!

806A0035 copy

I used my Brother Scan N Cut 2 to cut out the word “one” here and you’ll see some more things similar in later photos. I love my electronic cutting machine fire things like this.

806A0050 copy

Let’s go ahead and talk about these balloons. Balloons are a huge waste of money, aren’t they?!? But you have to have them to add to the esthetics!  I wanted clear so I got a huge bag of clear latex balloons from Amazon. I cut strips of teal, white, and pink tissue paper to give them tassels.  You see the confetti in there? Yep…I punched circles using the same tissue paper and hand-stuffed 12 balloons before taking them to a local floral shop to have them blown up. 😱  I know…I’m either hardcore or somewhat over the top crazy about this decor.

IMG_0311.PNG

My apologies if this is a bad picture. It’s a direct screenshot from a photo I posted on Instagram.  That’s my handwriting on those teeny tshirts!!! I made two for a neighbor who turned one in March and the gold one for Lyla to wear on her birthday.

806A0054 copy

I learned a few things practicing handlettering since I created the invitation! 😜  This chalkboard is done using Chalkola markers. These markers are amazingly vibrant. So I’m going to have to say this…the company reached out to me and sent me these markers for free. First time that’s ever happened to me!  If you want some…click HERE. Enter the following code to get a 15% discount: 15OFFSTAR. It comes with a pack of metallic chalk markers that are amazing too!

806A0038 copy

This is another quick project. I usually make a banner to display monthly baby photos but decided after walking down the aisles at Michaels that I wanted a frame. I had one sitting at home all busted up without glass on it-so I spray-painted it white and hot glued twine on them. I made a bunch of Pom Poms and tied them in randomness spots to the twine. Numbers cut using my electronic cutter and got photos printed at Walmart. The backing is just posterboard. Nothing too fancy. I actually have something hanging behind it that I didn’t want to take down…got lazy…hence the posterboard. 😬🙄

806A0028 copy

My first day off work was supposed to be a shopping day. I waited…and waited…and waited for my husband to get home. If you know anything about residents-when they say they should be off by 1pm….don’t expect them to walk through the door until at least 5:30pm. This is at least true for my husband. Nevermind the numerous times I’ve been disappointed…I’m learning slowly not to believe him when he gives me a time. So while I waited…I decided I would make a wall arrangement of paper flowers. I used card stock and cut out petals. I tend to always tweak things I see – but the tutorial I watched can be found HERE. It turned out amazing-way better than I had envisioned!

806A0026

Maybe you’ll believe me…maybe you won’t…but I spent 2 days on those cookies. If you ever wonder why decorated sugar cookies cost so much-its because it takes a lot of time and detail. Ok…so a few hours to bake them on one night…and at least another 5 to decorate them on another. Making royal icing and coloring them to your liking takes at least another hour. It’s no joke. It’s a definite labor of love.

806A0032 copy

I spent another day baking just cakes, cupcakes, and cake pops. I made a cake just like this the week before in teal for Lyla’s smash cake photos. You can see it in the photo above below the paper flowers on the wall. So for the party-I thought I would make a pink one instead. I also baked vanilla and chocolate cupcakes with frosting in the same colors.

806A0030 copy

These were simple and took little time compared to everything else I did. Gold cupcake liners for the win!

806A0034 copy

Don’t look too closely-they are far from perfect. The stand is a Deflecto brand that is versatile. I found it on Amazon-there are lots of different options!  These cake pops were a huge hit with the kids and disappeared first!

IMG_2446 copy

I also had a spread of savory appetizers which were only touched by adults and is nothing too amazing to share. But that’s a wrap, Ya’ll!  It was a full-house!  Hardly any room to walk at all and I was so happy with the outcome!  It’s also a relief that it’s over! Phew!

Cake copy

I can’t leave you without a tease of Lyla and her cake. I hate to post a personal photo so I’ve tried to put a big watermark over the image (for the unwelcome who might try to save the photo regardless…you are trespassing and violating my wishes). I hope everyone else enjoys viewing my post and can get some wonderful ideas for their next party!

XOXO,

Caly sig

Week 4 of the 30 day Coloring Challenge

My final week was very colorful!  I’m sad the challenge is over but the pressure is off! Lots of floral images – my favorite!  Let’s dive right in:

Day 22:  A Beautiful Adventure

Beautiful Adventure

This new Lawn Fawn set is called Bicycle Built for You – it’s so sweet!  I love bicycle images and there are a lot available!  I don’t have them all because I can’t justify spending money on stamp sets just because I like bicycles – but I LOVE these images.  You can find the set here.  Lawn Fawn has lots of coordinating products too!  How fun would it be to make this card interactive?

Day 23:  Adore You

Adore You - You are Amazing

So I’m going to have to tell you…that white gel pens are a must-have for accenting your cards!  I’ve learned through this challenge that without them…your image can’t go to the next level.  Seriously…Gelly Roll pens are a dollar…go get yourself one.  I know that Signo Uniballs are better quality as far as opacity…but I have had no trouble with the less expensive Sakura Gelly Roll pens!  This Altenew Adore You stamp set can be found here. I splattered the black using black soot distress ink – I think a real paint would’ve looked better but I was being lazy…

Day 24:  Canopy Hello

Floral Canopy 2

This Avery Elle Set is a full panel (4.25″ x 5.5″) – so pretty!  You can find the stamp set here.  I colored all the images using Copics (always my coloring of choice when I have time).  Accented with a white gel pen and highlight the entire canopy using the lightest blue.

Day 25:  Mondo Hydrangea

Blue Hydrangea

I googled a blue hydrangea to see if I could imitate it.  WHAT A CHALLENGE!  You can find this Mondo Hydrangea stamp set here.  Seriously so pretty! I used a Copic Multiliner to add veins to the petals and a white gelly roll pen to highlight the outer edges of the petal.

Day 26:  Friends and Coffee

Coffee and Friends 1

This card is so simple and fun for a friend.  You can find the stamp set here. Lots of fun coffee/latte images.  The red rim on this image reminds of small business diners.. 🙂

Day 27:  Hello Lovely

Hello Lovely

This image – it speaks for itself, doesn’t it! Concord and 9th really created something magical with this stamp set.  You can find it here.  I stamped and embossed this image and watercolored this image using Zig Clean Color Real Brush Markers with an aqua pen.

Day 28:   Fintastic

You're Fintastic 1

This Lawn Fawn stamp set is adorable! I have wanted it for a long time but had resisted until recently.  I’ve been on a kick to get more kid-friendly stamp sets lately since my kids have so many birthday parties to go to.  You can find this stamp set here.  It looks like a lot of masking but I actually fussy cut all the images.  NEITHER is fun.  lol

Day 29:  Birthday Flyby

Birthday Flyby 1

This dragon stamp set by My Favorite Things can be found here. I layered the clouds for some added dimension and also added foam to the dragon and puff of fire also.  The background is lightly sponged in blue although you can’t really tell here as it blends in with the cardbase.

Day 30:  Floral Hello

Floral Hello2

This Mama Elephant stamp set is so pretty! This Botanical Hello stamp set can be found here.  I used Zig Clean Color Real Brush Markers to color this again. Embossing an image always helps to prevent bleeding.  You can’t see the shimmer but I added Wink of Stella Clear shimmer over the flowers and Glossy Accent over the word “Hello.”

I’ve had so much fun making these cards for this challenge.  I hope you enjoyed it!

XOXO,

caly-sig
