2017 Year of the Rooster Lucky Red Envelopes

Happy Lunar New Year!

I wish all my wonderful family and friends much love, good health, and prosperity this coming year.  It’s been such a long week. My little Liam turned 4 on Monday and my nephew Aaron turned 15 on Wednesday.  My family also experienced loss today.  Even in despair, we were able to unite and celebrate the new year before last minute trips out of the country.   Cancer is such a terrible thing but I take solace in knowing the pain and suffering has ended. We were supposed to celebrate on Sunday because because this happened, I scrambled today to get these envelopes made.

I learned last year from making these envelopes, that 80lb paper was too thick.  So this year, I went to Michaels and got a pack of 65lb red cardstock.  It’s inexpensive and serves its purpose great for this project.  I use the Mama Elephant Lucky Envelope die and cut out two envelopes. Then I stamped twenty roosters and lamps on cardstock and colored them using Copic markers.

2017-lucky-envelope

I do have matching dies to cut these out, but it so much faster to zip them through my Brother Scan N’ Cut 2.  I should think about selling the dies for these stamp sets (Mama Elephant’s Lunar Animals and Lunar Extras).

2017-lucky-envelope-1

Eep! They are sooo cute!  I set these aside and began to emboss the sentiment and an image of cherry blossoms from the Lunar Extras set onto the red envelopes using my MISTI tool.  I speed up this process by stamping and applying powder to a batch of envelopes before heat setting them. Once that was done – it was a matter of gluing these chickidees onto the envelope.

2017-lucky-envelope-2

I really look forward to making these every year for the next 10 years…lol…just so I can design each a little different and use each of the 12 animals on this stamp set.  Last year, I make envelopes using monkeys.  If you wish to see that project, simply click HERE.

Before I go, I also want to share a quick birthday card I made using an Altenew layering set. I believe this stamp set is from a set called Beautiful Day.  I could be wrong.  It’s 1:34 am right now and I’m super tired!

beautiful-day

All stamping and no coloring here (I did outline those berries – but that doesn’t count as coloring).

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

XOXO,

Your Day to Sparkle

Even though many don’t like the thought of getting older, there’s still something to be celebrated about a birthday. You celebrate your previous year’s accomplishments and look forward to the next year’s challenges. And truly for me…there’s something to be said about taking the time to make birthday cards.  The gesture either fosters growth and strength in current relationships, or it will rekindle ones that we have not been able to care for. I’m definitely reminded of that this week with 3 birthdays for 3 very different women in my life.

c9-birthday

I made lots of birthday cards on my week off last week when the boys took their winter break.  This one took the most time, but I also enjoyed watercoloring it so much. I embossed the cake image and sentiment using Versafine Onyx black ink and clear powder. Then the stars using WOW Silver Pearl powder.

c9-birthday-2

I used Distress Ink to watercolor this image and I love how vibrant the flowers are.

c9-birthday-1

I matted this watercolor panel on top of some Stampin’ Up Perfect Plum and that’s it! Hope you all enjoyed!

Until next time,

Holiday Photo Card Blog Hop!

blop-hop-header

Hi Everyone!

I’m so excited you’re here to hop along with LiveLoveCard’s Holiday Photo Card Blog Hop.  This is the first one that I’ve ever been a part of and I am so honored!  I’ve made holiday cards for the past three years and have always included a personal family photo with each and I’m excited to share my card this year as a part of this blog hop.  There are 11 total hop stops so please hop along when you’re done here and view the other cards to get ideas for your own cards this year!  It’s not too late!  And of course…leave a comment to be entered for a chance to win some amazing prizes! Darlene (the owner of the LiveLoveCards community has 9 prizes to share) -details are below!

2016-holiday-cards-7

My card is a case of one of Concord & 9th’s cards using their Take a Bough dies.  I got this set last year and didn’t get a chance to use them and I really love the card I saw.  I’ve added my own touches with an embossed snowfall background and tag with hollies and berries.  Each piece is heat embossed for a raised look. It’s simple and straight forward but really screams holiday.  When making cards in mass production, it’s quickest to do each step individually and then assemble at the very end when each component is complete.

2016-holiday-cards-1

First, I cut out all my boughs/pines.  This part, I have to admit…is painstaking long.  I used 3 different shades of green cardstock, more than 2 full sheets each (8 1/2 x11). I cut them down to 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 pieces to make it easier to run through my big shot…but can you imagine?! 8 pines for each card – that’s 4 boughs – for 64 cards!  *GASP*  I found myself very frustrated but here’s a tip I decided to try towards the END of this long process.  The paper doesn’t release from the dies well after a few cuts.  I was using my paper piercing tool to push them out and ending up tearing a lot so I took a dryer sheet, folded it three times and ran my dies through my die cut machine. This gives it a nice waxy coat and they release from the die SOOOO much easier.  Ugh…I wish I had done it sooner!

2016-holiday-cards-2

Once they were all cut, I cut them in half and started grouping 4 random pieces together and used my handheld stapler to hold them together. This was the quickest for me. If you have a better way of holding 4 pieces of this together – by all means – do it!  And tell me about it because I’d like to know!

Next, I prepared my tags (I couldn’t decide between white and red so I did both) by cutting pieces that were 2″ by 2 1/2″ (this is a little snug…if I could do it again, I would do 2 1/2″ by 2 1/2″). I stamped them all in batches using Versamark ink and embossed the white pieces with red powder and the red pieces with white powder.  Then – you die cut them all…Yes…I did it 64 times.  *sigh*  BUT THIS IS WORTH IT!

2016-holiday-cards-4

2016-holiday-cards-3

I tied some red and white twine to the tags and then stamped a bunch of hollies and berries (holly and berries?) on white cardstock and ran this through my Brother Scan N’ Cut 2 so it can cut each piece out for me.  Seriously ya’ll…this is the BEST birthday present ever – put it on your Christmas wish list!  Mine was purchased on Amazon but it’s available in stores at Michael’s now!  NO MORE FUSSY CUTTING!  It scans anything flat and cuts it out – perfect for stampers.  Just so you know – I’m not getting paid to brag about this amazing product!  I wish I were ;).  So I adhered these hollies and berries to the tags and to add a bit more umph…I used some red stickles on the berries.  I’m impatient – but I laid them all aside to dry as I stamped and embossed the cards with snowfall.

2016-holiday-cards

Once the card bases themselves were stamped and embossed, it was time for the assembly.  Put the boughs on, leaving room in the center for your tag.  I adhered the boughs on using glue dots and adhered the tags on using Stampin’ Dimensionals.

2016-holiday-cards-5

I didn’t do anything too clever with my photo this year – last year I sewed it to my card.  If you’d like to see it, click HERE. I got some clear photo corners and adhered them to the inside top portion of my card.  I’m not fancy – I make my own collage using PhotoScape and then I print them via Walmart online – it’s the cheapest option and they have a photo size of 4″ x 5.33″ – fits perfectly in an A2 card with a nice matt around the photo.

2016-holiday-cards-8

I got a custom stamp made this year for our names – saves me from writing the same thing so many times!  I have used this Etsy shop many times for my “handmade by” stamps and address stamps and I love it!  It does take a few weeks to get as it is made and shipped from Malaysia – but it’s affordable if you have time to wait.  The link is listed below with all of my supplies. I plan to hand address these in calligraphy and hope these get mailed to be received by Thanksgiving.  HAPPY HOLIDAYS, everyone!

That wraps up this year’s photo holiday card for me.  Thank you sooooooo much for being a part of this blog hop and for stopping by!

HERE is the video of the process if you’re interested in seeing it.  Please give me a thumbs up!

Grateful

Thanksgiving is less than 2 weeks away, Ya’ll!!!

My Favorite Things (MFT) is challenging crafters to spread thankfulness by making a card for someone you’re thankful for. I had some time last night so I created this card using a set called Geometric Greenery and Grateful by MFT.  It’s also helping me to participate in Kathy Racoosin’s 30 day color challenge.  🙂

grateful-greenery-2

I stamped the images with Versafine Onyx Black ink and embossed them with clear powder on Canson XL watercolor paper so I can use various colors of Zig Clean Color Real Brush Markers to color the panel – leaving room in the center for this “grateful” die cut from the Grateful set.

grateful-greenery-1

I added glossy accents on op of this die cut word to give it some shine and dimension.  When I was done coloring, I decided I wanted to accent the leaves using dots and lines using a white gel pen. I also went around all the images with blue and dispersed the color with some water to blur the lines. It really makes it pop!  To finish it off, I matted it with some Rich Razzleberry cardstock by Stampin’ Up.  It was a quick card and it turned out beautifully.

grateful-greenery

I have so many people to be grateful for.  This amazing community of crafters who are always so supportive of one another with uplifting comments.  It always brings me so much comfort to know that I’m not alone in finding joy in creating.  This thought always brings me back to my previous neighbor, Karen, who introduced me to stamping/card-making.  She’s such a beautiful person and remains a special part of our lives so I want to dedicate this card to her.

Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

XOXO,

caly-sig

Spring/Easter Cards

So I didn’t win the MFT 2016 Card Design Superstar contest-but some truly amazing, deserving, talented people did!

Anyway – today I’m going to share a few more Splitcoaststampers cards I made from March for “The Little Things” theme.

The first card is a simple layered floral card that I stamped in white ink and colored over using Prismacolor colored pencils.  Not much to say about it!

penelopes-blossoms

penelopes-blossoms-2

I will list supplies below 🙂

My second card is a cute Easter shaker card using another stamp set by Lawn Fawn. I stamped and colored the images using copic markers and used some distress ink to add color to the top panel before adding my cut-outs.

chirpy-chirp-chirp

The egg is on the inside of the card so the shaker portion is see-through through both top panels.

chirpy-chirp-chirp-1

Phew! 3 months down and 3 more to go!  I hope you like these cards!

XOXO,

YOU are Absolutely Fabulous!

Thanks for tuning in for my third and final card for the 2016 Card Design Superstar Contest by My Favorite Things!

Print

When I thought about entering this contest last week – I had only planned on making ONE card.  I can’t believe I’ve made 3 cards in 2 days!!!  That’s a lot for me these days!  I’ve had to work on them in 10 min increments and late into the night but they’re all done and I can’t be happier that I’ve done 3 cards – each unique and different to show MFT who I am as a card designer.

absolutely-fabulous-1

I honestly had no idea where I was going with this card. I went through all my MFT products and knew I wanted to use the new Geometric Greenery stamp set – so I decided I’d want to use the Homespun dies as an accent.  I also decided I wanted to use the Absolutely Fabulous dies because I had never used them before so I just threw it all together and am glad it worked out!  PHEW!

absolutely-fabulous-3

At first, I wanted to in-lay the word fabulous, but it didn’t stand out enough to me – so I applied a heavier coat of distress ink over it and propped it up on some white craft foam. I LOVE IT!

absolutely-fabulous

I also LOVE distress ink. SERIOUSLY – it turns all my white paper into magical colors!

absolutely-fabulous-2

And how about those pretty leaves?! I colored them using Zig Clean Color Real Brush markers. The top panel is Canson XL watercolor paper by the way – and it took the ink blending particularly well! I was worried about it when I first started!

You are ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS for following along – thank you for all your support!  Again – WISH ME LUCK! I WANNE BE A SUPERSTAR! 😀

XOXO,

3D Holiday Scene

Print

Welcome back!  Thanks for staying tuned to see my second card for the My Favorite Things’ Card Design Superstar Contest!  I created this card using ONE
simple die.  THAT’S RIGHT! You don’t need a fancy die – you just have to be BRAVE.  I took lots of photos so if you want to see the process – keep reading! 🙂  This card folds and fits in an A2 (4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″) envelop.

christmas-elf-scene-7

I started with a piece of white cardstock that is 4 1/4″ x 7″ – scored 1.5″ from each end. I didn’t know what I was going to do so I scored it first.  If you want to ink blend like I did – you can get a cleaner look by blending color first, then scoring. I chose Spun Sugar, Dried Marigold and Tumbled glass to achieve the sunset colors above.

christmas-elf-scene-6

I centered the die over this panel and made the first cut – don’t worry! I know it’s not long enough to cut through the entire 7″ panel! The first cut will guide you to cut the ends – I promise!  Once you cut the center, just line up the die with one end to cut the rest- you can feel it sit in the previous cut like it’s meant to be :). Repeat with the other end.

christmas-elf-scene-5

Using the same die and a flatter die from the same die set, I cut out two hills from lengths of 4 1/2″ – you can make the height however high you want, then added some Pumice Stone ink to make it look like dirty snow. Snow is dirty when stepped it. And color gives it depth. hehe. Score 1/4″ from each end – this is where you’ll put your adhesive to add them to the previous panel to make this card 3D.

I’m old school and still have some sticky strip – it’s not the stuff you can easily tear. It’s ok – use what you have!  I put one side down, making sure it’s lined up with the bottom of the card. See photo above. Once that is adhered, leave it laying flat and remove the backing from the other two “hills” and just fold over the right panel. This will ensure it sits in the right place perfectly and can fold flat to put in an envelop if you want to mail it.  You have your card base – now you can decorate it how you want! Oh – and if you haven’t noticed- I flickered some water on this panel to add water blots to give it a “snowfall” background too.

christmas-elf-scene

I colored an elf and christmas tree using Copic markers and added some embellishments using a Sakura White Gelly Roll pen and some Marvy Snow Marker embossing liquid to create the fur on the elf’s hat and sleeves.

christmas-elf-scene-2

AHHH!!! Isn’t he cute?!?  I just love this card so much!

christmas-elf-scene-1

I hope you enjoyed it! Please stay tuned – I will post my final card for the contest TOMORROW!!! WISH ME LUCK! I really WANNE BE A SUPERSTAR!

XOXO,
